Difficulty: Easy

Budget: Affordable

Serving size: 2 servings

Calories: 250 kcals / 2 slices

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of multigrain bread
  • 1 egg and replace the second one with a mashed banana or approximately 60 ml (1/4 cup) of unsweetened applesauce
  • 240 ml (1 cup) of skim milk or low-fat plant-based milk
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Coconut oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs (and mashed banana), skim milk, honey, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  2. Melt oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg and skim milk mixture, making sure to coat both sides.
  4. Place the bread slices in the hot skillet and cook until golden and crispy on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve hot with maple syrup, butter, jam, or fresh fruit.

Tips

  1. Use stale bread for the best results. Fresh bread will absorb too much of the egg mixture and become soggy.
  2. Make sure to whisk the egg mixture thoroughly to ensure an even coating on the bread.
  3. Don’t soak the bread for too long, as it will become too saturated and difficult to handle. A quick dip is all that’s needed.
  4. Keep the cooked French toast warm in a low oven while you finish cooking the remaining slices.
  5. Experiment with different toppings, such as fresh fruit, whipped cream, or Nutella, to make your French toast even more delicious.

This healthy French toast recipe is quick and easy to make, and the result is a deliciously sweet and crispy breakfast that will have you wanting more. It’s just one example of the many mouthwatering French recipes that can be savored at any time of day.
